5M1E Analysis law - human machine material method loop measurement

1. What is 5M1E

Man-machine material measurement is the Total Quality Management theory (TQM-Total quality Management) in the six main factors

affecting product quality, also known as 5M1E. But in the beginning, only 4M1E, that is, "human-machine material loop", contained

part of the content of the test in the method. Later, people separated the "measurement" from the law, improved and supplemented

the whole theory, and formed the current 5M1E.


a) Man: the operator's knowledge of quality, technical proficiency, physical condition, etc.;

b) Machine: the accuracy and maintenance status of machine equipment and measuring instruments;

c) Material: the composition, physical properties and chemical properties of the material;

d) Method: including production process, equipment selection, operating procedures, etc.;

e) Measurement: mainly refers to whether the method taken during measurement is standard and correct;

f) Environment: the temperature, humidity, lighting and cleaning conditions of the working place;


2.5M1E factor analysis and control measures

2.1. Operator factors


All the defects produced by the process in which the operator plays a leading role can generally be controlled by the operator as the

main reasons for the operation error are: poor quality awareness; Careless operation; Non-compliance with operating procedures; 

Low operational skills, technical unproficiency, and boredom due to simple and repetitive work.


Anti-error control measures:

1) Strengthen the quality awareness education of "quality first, user first, the next process is the user", and establish and improve the

quality responsibility system;

2) Prepare clear and detailed operation process, strengthen professional training of process, and issue operation certificate;

3) Strengthen inspection work and appropriately increase the frequency of inspection;

4) Eliminate the boredom of operators by means of inter-job personnel adjustment and enriching work experience;

5) Extensively carry out QCC quality control circle activities to promote self-improvement and self-improvement ability.


2.2. Machine and equipment factors

The main control measures are:

1) Strengthen equipment maintenance and maintenance, regularly test the key precision and performance items of machinery and

equipment, and establish a daily inspection system for key parts of equipment, and focus on the control of equipment at process

quality control points;

2) Use first-piece inspection to verify the adjustment of positioning or measuring devices;

3) As far as possible to cultivate automatic display and automatic recording device of positioning data, by reducing the dependence on

workers to adjust the reliability of the work.


2.3. Material factors

The main control measures are:

1) Clearly specify the quality requirements in the raw material purchase contract;

2) Strengthen the incoming inspection of raw materials and the process and finished product inspection of homemade parts in the factory;

3) Reasonable selection of suppliers (including "outsourced factories");

4) Improve the cooperative relationship between cooperative factories, urge and help suppliers to do a good job in quality control and

quality assurance.


2.4. Factors of process method

Process methods include the arrangement of process flow, the connection between processes, the selection of process processing

means (the selection of processing environmental conditions, the selection of process equipment configuration, the selection of process

parameters) and the preparation of process processing guidance documents (such as process cards, operating procedures, operation

instructions,  process quality analysis tables, etc.).


The influence of process methods on process quality mainly comes from two aspects: one is the correctness and rationality of the specified

processing method, the selection of process parameters and process equipment, and the other is the seriousness of the implementation

and execution of the process method.

Error prevention and control measures of the process:

1) Ensure the accuracy of the positioning device, strictly check the first part, and ensure the accuracy of the positioning center to prevent

the data distribution center of machining characteristics from deviating from the specification center;

2) Strengthen technical and business training, so that operators are familiar with the installation and adjustment methods of positioning

devices, and configure the device that displays positioning data as much as possible;

3) Strengthen the sharpening and management of shaped tools or cutting tools, and implement a mandatory replacement system;

4) Actively implement control chart management in order to take timely measures to adjust;

5) Strict process discipline, check and supervise the implementation of operating procedures.

6) Strengthen the management of tools and measuring instruments, and effectively do the periodic inspection of tooling and mold and

the periodic calibration of measuring instruments.


2.5. Measured factors

Key control measures include:

1) Determine the measurement task and the required accuracy, and select the test equipment to be used with the required accuracy

and precision capabilities.

2) Confirm, calibrate and adjust all measuring and test equipment on a regular basis.

3) Specify the necessary calibration procedures. The contents include equipment type, number, location, verification period, verification

method, acceptance method, acceptance standard, and measures to be taken when problems occur.

4) Keep calibration records.

5) When the measurement and test equipment is found to be not in a calibrated state, the validity of the previous measurement and

test results is immediately assessed and recorded in the relevant documents.


2.6 Environmental factors

The so-called environment generally refers to the temperature, humidity, noise interference, vibration, lighting, indoor purification and

site pollution level of the production site.


In addition to ensuring the special requirements of products for environmental conditions, we should also do a good job of site finishing, 

rectification and cleaning work, vigorously do a good job of civilized production, and create conditions for lasting production of

high-quality products.


3.5M1E applications


3.1 Site Management


1, process standardization: process standardization is the key to process quality, process standardization has a prominent position in

process quality improvement, process quality is affected by 5M1E that is, human, machine, material, method, environment and

measurement of six factors, so work standardization is to seek 5M1E standardization;

2, quality improvement: 5M1E is the six main factors affecting product quality, is the main direction of analysis of quality problems;

3, management improvement: 5M1E is the basis of site management, is the main direction to improve the management level;

4, design scheme verification: fully carry out 5M1E analysis and verification in the design stage, can make the design scheme more in

line with the requirements of the work.


3.2 Troubleshooting


5M1E is the direction for us to analyze and think about problems. To solve on-site problems, it should be combined with other management

tools to find the root cause of problems and formulate corresponding improvement measures. Common tools include the following:
